"My submission represents this year's Image Tree theme because the poem's narration follows the same style and storyline found in H.D.'s poem "Circe". H.D. was a poet in the early 1900's, making her my classical inspiration. I interpreted the speaker in "Circe" to be a powerful and magical woman who simultaneously yearns for the attention of an unrequited lover. A bit upset at the reality of the power of love being a match for mystical power, I decided to create "Damned" as a re-write of the speaker's emotional regulation. However, still admiring H.D.'s literary style, I decided to emulate the format of the stanzas and the chronological order of the story. In "Damned" the speaker holds a more irritable tone and as opposed to being won over by love, she is triumphant in remaining unscathed. Although my poem ends similarly to H.D.'s, my speaker chooses self-preservation as opposed to self-destruction."
